In the beginning....
One of the main reasons the Posssumtown Fire Company was formed was because back
in 1948 the Possumtown area was an isolated section of the township and the response
time to this side of town was aproximately 15-20 minutes for the other fire companies.
After several small fires and two large fires one in particular that destroyed homes on
Normandy drive and Second Avenue before firemen could arrive,t he neighbors knew it
was time to protect themselves from the ravages of fire. The wives in the neighborhood
thought that if they placed large barrels of water throughout the neighborhood ot would
help the firemen when they arrived. They discussed this with their husbands who also
agreed. In March 1948 , the men an women of the Possumtown section banded togheter at
a meeting held in the garage of Mr and Mrs Seiz on Third Avenue and decided they really
needed their own fire company.
With the support and donations from each of the 44 families in the neighborhood, the
Possumtoen volunteer Company was formed in April 1948. In December, 1948 the alarm
sounded for the first house fire. A faulty wire for Christmas decorations caused a fire in the
linving room in a house of Stratton street. The fire was put out and the house was saved.
Our first firetruck
In 1948, money was donated by the families in the area and the company purchased a
used International year 1937 firetruck for $ 500, the 1000 gallons tank was purchased
separately for $ 300 , also were added a pump and a siren for US 350 making a total cost of
the truck aproximatrely $ 1150. It may not been the pretties truck, but with 400 feet of 2
inches hose they were ready for business. That truck served our comunity until 1952 when
a Tasc fire truck replaced it.
